From his childhood in a modest family, Robert de Sorbon keeps during his whole life a care for the education of poor teenagers.
After he has become a thomist theologian, his sermons and his remarkable lectures make him appointed as saint Louis' chaplain and confessor.
In 1253, he founds a society of poor secular ecclesiastics who live in poverty and devote themselves exclusively to free teaching : it' the beginning from la Sorbonne which starts in 1257.
Supported by the king, the school soon becomes a high place for thought, moral and knowledge. Students and theologians from all over Europe throng to it. The renowned present university la Sorbonne originates from it.
In 1258, canon of Paris, Robert de Sorbon is henceforth asked for advice from all over the realm, but he keeps his concern for education and, in 1271, he sets up the school de Calvi for the youngest.
Main works : De Consciencia, Super Confessione, Iter Paradisi, Glossae divinorum librorum.
