Biography : Born in Lewiston, Maine in 1936, Bertrand Mathieu has taught American literature in the U.S.A. France, Germany, the People's Republic of China, and the Kingdom of Saoudi Arabia. He has been Fulbright Professor of American Literature, at the University of Athens, Greece, from 1979 to 1981, and more recently at the University of Dakar, Senegal, in West Africa, from 1986 to 1987. He has lived and traveled widely in Germany, Italy, England, Yugoslavia, Greece, Mexico, Turkey, HongKong, Taiwan, and the American Southwest, where he earned a Ph. D. in English at the University of Arizona (Tucson) in 1975. Mathieu's poems, translations (Rimbaud, Miller) reviews, and critical essays have appeared widely. A former Woodrow Wilson Fellow, Mathieu was a recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Lilly Foundation at Yale University. He now lives in Charleville in "Rimbaldie". |
